About BMI (Body Mass Index)

BMI is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m² where kg is a person's weight in kilograms and m² is their height in meters squared.

BMI Categories:

  • Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
  • Normal weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9
  • Overweight: BMI 25 to 29.9
  • Obesity: BMI 30 or greater

Limitations of BMI

While BMI can be a useful tool for identifying potential weight issues, it does have limitations:

  • It doesn't account for differences in body composition (muscle vs. fat)
  • It doesn't consider the location of body fat
  • It may not be accurate for athletes, elderly individuals, or pregnant women
  • It doesn't account for ethnic and racial differences in body composition

Always consult with a healthcare professional for a complete assessment of your health and appropriate recommendations for your individual situation.
