Frequently Asked Questions

How much is car tax in 2026/27?

For most cars registered since 1 April 2017, the standard rate is £200 a year from the second tax payment onwards. Cars with a list price over £40,000, or over £50,000 for electric cars, pay an extra £440 a year for five years, making £640. Older cars are taxed on CO2 emissions or engine size.

Do electric cars pay car tax now?

Yes. Since April 2025 electric cars pay vehicle tax. A new electric car pays £10 in its first year and then the standard £200 a year. Electric cars registered from 1 April 2025 with a list price over £50,000 also pay the £440 expensive car supplement for five years. Electric cars registered between 2001 and 2017 pay the lowest band rate of £20.

What is the expensive car supplement?

An extra £440 a year for cars with a list price over £40,000 (or over £50,000 for electric cars). It is paid for five years, starting from the second time the car is taxed. The list price is the published price before discounts, including options, not what you paid.

Is it cheaper to pay car tax annually?

Yes. Paying 12 months in one go costs the standard amount, while 12 monthly Direct Debits add 5%. Six-month payments also cost slightly more over a year.

Do classic cars pay car tax?

Cars built more than 40 years ago can be registered in the historic vehicle tax class and are exempt, as long as they are not used commercially. You still need to tax the vehicle, but it costs nothing.
