About DVT Wells Score
The DVT Wells score is a clinical prediction rule used to estimate the pre-test probability of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) before more definitive testing. It helps to determine the need for further diagnostic tests.
Interpretation
This is the two-level Wells score used in NICE guideline NG158 (Wells et al., 2003), which includes previously documented DVT:
- 2 points or more: DVT likely
- 1 point or less: DVT unlikely
The older three-level version (Wells et al., 1997) splits patients into low, moderate and high probability, but UK pathways use the two-level score.
