Frequently Asked Questions

GPA is the weighted average of your grade points. For each course, multiply the grade points (e.g. A = 4.0, B = 3.0) by the number of credit hours/units. Add these "quality points" together, then divide by the total credit hours. The result is your GPA.

It uses the standard US 4.0 scale with plus/minus: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0.0. Some schools use slightly different values (e.g. A+ = 4.0 capped) – check your institution's grading policy.

Unweighted GPA treats every course equally on a 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA gives extra points to honors, AP, IB or college-prep courses (often +0.5 or +1.0), so a weighted GPA can exceed 4.0 (e.g. 4.5 or 5.0). This calculator gives an unweighted (standard credit-weighted) GPA.

Use the "Previous GPA" field to enter your current cumulative GPA and total credit hours earned. The calculator will combine those quality points with your current semester to produce a new cumulative GPA.

No. Most institutions exclude pass/fail (P/NP), audit, withdrawn (W) and incomplete (I) courses from GPA. Only enter graded courses with letter grades that map to grade points.

UK universities typically use a percentage / classification system (First, 2:1, 2:2, Third) rather than a 4.0 GPA. This calculator is on the US 4.0 scale, but is useful for UK students applying to US graduate schools who need to convert classifications to GPA equivalents.
