High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC): If you or your partner earns over £60,000, you may have to pay back some or all of your Child Benefit through the tax system.
Should I Still Claim Child Benefit?

Yes, you should still claim Child Benefit even if you'll have to pay the HICBC because:

  • National Insurance credits: The parent who claims gets NI credits towards their State Pension if they're not working or earning below the NI threshold
  • Child gets a National Insurance number: Automatically issued before their 16th birthday
  • Income may change: If the higher earner's income drops below £60,000, you'll keep all the benefit
Opt out of payments: You can claim Child Benefit but opt not to receive payments. You'll still get the NI credits without having to pay HICBC.
How HICBC Works (from 2024/25)
  • £60,000 - £80,000: Charge increases gradually (1% of benefit for every £200 of income over £60,000)
  • Over £80,000: You repay 100% of the Child Benefit

Note: Before April 2024, the threshold was £50,000-£60,000. The thresholds increased to £60,000-£80,000 from April 2024.

About Child Benefit
Who Can Claim?

You can claim Child Benefit if you're responsible for a child who is:

  • Under 16
  • Under 20 and in approved education or training
Only One Person Can Claim

Only one person can receive Child Benefit for each child. If two people try to claim, HMRC will decide who should receive it.

How It's Paid

Child Benefit is usually paid every 4 weeks. You can choose to be paid weekly if you're a single parent or receiving certain other benefits.

Two-Child Limit

If your third or subsequent child was born on or after 6 April 2017, you can still claim Child Benefit for them. The two-child limit only affects some other benefits like Universal Credit.
