PE Wells Score

About PE Wells Score

The PE Wells score is a clinical prediction rule used to estimate the pre-test probability of pulmonary embolism (PE) before more definitive testing. It helps to determine the need for further diagnostic tests.

Interpretation

The PE Wells score helps determine the clinical probability of PE:

  • Score ≤ 4: PE unlikely (≈12% risk of PE)
  • Score > 4: PE likely (≈30% risk of PE)

There is also a three-tiered stratification:

  • Score < 2: Low probability (≈4% risk of PE)
  • Score 2-6: Moderate probability (≈23% risk of PE)
  • Score > 6: High probability (≈49% risk of PE)
