Wells Score for PE Calculator
Calculate pretest probability of pulmonary embolism (PE) using the Wells criteria to guide diagnostic decisions in line with UK clinical pathways.
Important Disclaimer: This calculator is for informational purposes only and should be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Suspected pulmonary embolism is a potentially life-threatening condition requiring urgent medical assessment and appropriate diagnostic testing.

About PE Wells Score
The PE Wells score is a clinical prediction rule used to estimate the pre-test probability of pulmonary embolism (PE) before more definitive testing. It helps to determine the need for further diagnostic tests.
Interpretation
The PE Wells score helps determine the clinical probability of PE:
- Score ≤ 4: PE unlikely (≈12% risk of PE)
- Score > 4: PE likely (≈30% risk of PE)
There is also a three-tiered stratification:
- Score < 2: Low probability (≈4% risk of PE)
- Score 2-6: Moderate probability (≈23% risk of PE)
- Score > 6: High probability (≈49% risk of PE)
