Frequently Asked Questions

You are entitled to statutory redundancy pay if you are an employee with at least 2 years continuous service and you are being made redundant. Agency workers, members of the armed forces and some other groups are excluded. The self-employed are not eligible.

For each full year of continuous service: 0.5 week's pay if aged under 22, 1 week's pay if aged 22 to 40, and 1.5 weeks' pay if aged 41 or over. Only whole years count and a maximum of 20 years can be used. Weekly pay is capped at £751 (2026/27). Age and length of service are counted at the date employment ends.

The maximum statutory redundancy payment is £22,530 (2026/27). This is calculated as 1.5 × 20 years × £751 weekly cap. Some employers pay more than the statutory minimum under "enhanced redundancy" schemes.

Statutory redundancy pay is tax-free. Any additional redundancy payment (contractual or ex gratia) is tax-free up to £30,000 combined with statutory redundancy pay. Amounts above £30,000 are taxable through PAYE and may also be subject to Class 1A National Insurance by the employer.
