How to Solve a Rubik's Cube - Beginner's Guide

Learning to solve a Rubik's Cube is a rewarding challenge. This guide teaches the layer-by-layer method, the most popular approach for beginners. With practice, you'll be able to solve any scrambled cube in under 2 minutes!

Rubik's Cube moves are written using a standard notation. Each letter represents a face of the cube:

The Six Faces
  • R = Right face
  • L = Left face
  • U = Up (top) face
  • D = Down (bottom) face
  • F = Front face
  • B = Back face
Move Modifiers
  • R = Clockwise 90°
  • R' = Counter-clockwise 90° (prime)
  • R2 = 180° turn (double)

Clockwise is determined as if you were looking directly at that face.

R Right face clockwise
R' Right face counter-clockwise
R2 Right face 180°

Goal: Create a white cross on the white face, with the edge colours matching the centre pieces of adjacent faces.

Tips for the White Cross:
  • Start with the white centre facing up
  • Find white edge pieces (pieces with white and one other colour)
  • Each edge must align with both the white centre AND the matching side centre
  • This step is intuitive - there's no single algorithm. Experiment!
Tip: If a white edge is on the bottom face, align it under its destination and turn that face twice (e.g., F2).

Goal: Insert the four white corner pieces to complete the first layer.

The Corner Algorithm:

Position the corner piece in the bottom layer, directly below where it needs to go. Then repeat this algorithm until the corner is solved:

R' D' R D

Repeat 1, 3, or 5 times until the corner is correctly placed

Finding Corner Pieces:
  • White corners have 3 colours: white + 2 adjacent colours
  • If the corner is in the top layer but wrong, use the algorithm to pop it out first
  • The corner's other colours tell you where it belongs

Goal: Insert the four edge pieces of the middle layer.

Two Algorithms:

Find an edge piece in the top layer that doesn't have yellow. Align the edge's front colour with its matching centre. Then use one of these algorithms:

Edge goes RIGHT:
U R U' R' U' F' U F
Edge goes LEFT:
U' L' U L U F U' F'
Tip: If an edge is in the middle layer but flipped or in the wrong position, use either algorithm to replace it with a random top-layer edge, then solve it properly.

Goal: Create a yellow cross on the top face (edges only, corners don't matter yet).

The Algorithm:

Starting Patterns:

You'll see one of these patterns. Apply the algorithm the shown number of times:

Dot
Apply 3 times

Line (horizontal)
Apply 2 times

L-shape (9 o'clock)
Apply 1 time

For the L-shape, position it at the back-left (like 9 o'clock) before applying the algorithm.

Goal: Move the yellow corners to their correct positions (they may still be twisted wrong).

The Algorithm:
U R U' L' U R' U' L
How to Use:
  1. Find a corner that's in the correct position (colours match the centres, even if twisted)
  2. Hold the cube with that corner at the front-right of the top layer
  3. If no corners are correct, apply the algorithm once from any position
  4. Repeat until all corners are in the correct positions

Goal: Twist the yellow corners so they all face up (yellow on top).

The Algorithm:
R' D' R D

(Same as the first layer corner algorithm!)

Important Steps:
  1. Hold the cube with yellow on top
  2. Position an unsolved corner at the front-right
  3. Repeat R' D' R D until that corner has yellow facing up (2 or 4 times)
  4. Do NOT rotate the whole cube! Turn only the top layer (U) to bring the next unsolved corner to front-right
  5. Repeat for each corner
Warning: The cube will look scrambled during this step - this is normal! Don't panic. Keep going until all corners are solved.

Goal: Move the last layer edges to their correct positions to solve the cube!

The Algorithm:
R U' R U R U R U' R' U' R2

This cycles 3 edges clockwise

How to Use:
  1. Turn the top layer (U moves) until at least one edge is solved (matches its centre)
  2. Hold the cube with the solved edge at the back
  3. Apply the algorithm
  4. If not solved, turn the top layer to put a solved edge at the back and repeat
Congratulations! If you've followed all the steps, your Rubik's Cube should now be solved!

Practice Tips:
  • Learn one step at a time - Master each step before moving on
  • Practice algorithms slowly - Speed comes from muscle memory
  • Use finger tricks - Learn to turn faces with your fingers, not your whole hand
  • Look ahead - While executing an algorithm, find your next piece
  • Solve the cross on the bottom - This lets you see the next step while finishing

Colour Arrangement

Standard Rubik's Cube colour scheme:

  • White opposite Yellow
  • Red opposite Orange
  • Blue opposite Green

With white on top and green facing you: red is on the right.
